How Our English Academic School Students Put Their Minds to the Test at the Waterloo Math Competition

At Kells Academy, we believe that our students should have the chance to pursue the subjects and areas that spark their curiosity and personal interests, including STEM fields like mathematics and computing. Every student has their own unique passions, talents, and learning style, and we want to provide them the opportunity to develop their skills, as well as participate in a little healthy competition from time to time.

Each year, the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) at the University of Waterloo designs and administers internationally-recognized Mathematics and Computing Contests to high school students around the world. The CEMC is Canada’s largest outreach organization and seeks to inspire the next generation of young learners across the globe to become more involved and passionate about mathematics and computer science. A select group of Kells students recently participated in the first round of contests and put their minds to the test as they took on the Mathematics and Computing competition.

The Mathematics and Computing Contests Inspire Young Learners Worldwide

One of the core values of Kells Academy is to encourage a lifelong love of learning in our students, and that includes providing them the opportunity to challenge themselves and build their problem-solving and analytical skills. The Mathematics and Computing Contests allow our students to get up close and personal with STEM-related subjects and test their mathematical abilities against approximately 25,000 high school students in Canada and around the world.

Preparing the next generation for the future through a diverse learning approach is a core belief at Kells Academy, and the CEMC contests gave our students a great opportunity to grow and challenge themselves during their learning journey. Kells was honoured to have the chance to take part this year, and we are extremely proud of our independent high school students for participating in such a fun and challenging event!

Our English Academic School Students Participated in Three Mathematics Contests

On February 26^th, thirty-four of our students came together to compete in the first of two international mathematics competitions. The University of Waterloo administers a variety of mathematical and computing challenges, and students across grades 9, 10, and 11 brought their problem-solving skills to the forefront in the Pascal, Cayley, and Fermat contests, respectively.

These contests quiz students on mathematical concepts, as well as their logical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Our students have been hard at work at our English academic school for the past several months as they prepared to put their minds to the test, and the dedication of our math superstars makes us confident that their soon-to-be-released results will be outstanding!

Kells Students Will Participate in Additional Upcoming Contests This Spring

Our high school students’ rigorous preparation hasn’t ended with the recent competition—in fact, they will be taking part in another set of competitions this April, and they won’t be alone. Our juniors in grades 7 and 8 will accompany them, and participate in the Gauss contest, which will give them a fun and exciting chance to test and develop their mathematical problem-solving skills.

Kells’ grade 12 students will be competing in the Euclid Mathematics Contest, which has the added benefit of making them eligible for consideration for Faculty of Mathematics Entrance Scholarships at the University of Waterloo–a good score can even help senior-level students gain admission into the university’s Mathematics programs!
