When a team of six Kells Mathletes stepped through the doors of St. George’s in early April, they were nervous, excited, and prepared for a day of challenging math problems and stiff competition. According to one of the team’s members, Norah, “when we walked in, it was a bit intimidating because all the schools participating have amazing reputations and the other teams are so smart. We had to believe in ourselves and be confident so that we could succeed as a team.”

Kells Academy is celebrating another milestone in a standout year for its Math Competition Team. Six senior students from the team — Hyun Jung, Sthefany He Chen, Norah Yang, Yutong Han, Chumeng Yi, and Molly Dong — placed first among all participating Montreal schools (14 anglophone private QAIS schools) at the Canadian Team Math Competition, held at St. George’s School in April. This competition took place over a whole day and had three parts: team, individual, and relay. Originally announced as second place finishers, a scoring review later confirmed that the Kells team had in fact outscored their competitors by two points.

At this time of year, many Kells Grade 12 graduates are home for the holidays. On any given day in December, you’ll likely find a former Kells student dropping by the school to catch up with old friends and mentors. You might even find Kells alumni tucked away in a classroom, studying for their university exams. That’s because Kells feels like home to them, a place where they grew in confidence and skill and made lifelong friends. A common thread among the Grade 12 graduates I caught up with is that Kells not only guided them in choosing the right postsecondary path, but also helped them excel in it.
