ACADEMIC PROGRAMS GRADES 7-11

At each grade, two or three programs are offered allowing students to learn within their own competency level. Programs promote an understanding and appreciation not only of the language, but of the cultural values of the society in which we live.

At Kells Academy, our French instruction is interactive and engaging. The students actively participate in theatre and other oral activities to develop their confidence. We use books adapted from French literature to make our teaching dynamic and interesting, always emphasizing the study of grammar to improve our student's written skills as well. Upon graduation, our students are capable of understanding and analyzing a variety of texts. They can also express themselves orally and in writing with ease and precision.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS GRADES 7-11

While Kells Academy adheres to guidelines established by the Quebec Ministry of Education, it delivers mathematics and science programs with significantly greater flexibility, identifying individual student skill levels as the first step in the process. By doing so, we ensure that students work within their range of ability and remain enthused and motivated, yet still challenged. Our program options—which include accelerated and moderate pace courses in Math and medium and high courses in Science—allow students to progress at their own pace, and where possible, to upgrade their level. This tailored approach has led to great success for our student scientists and mathematicians, who regularly earn honours in science fairs and national mathematics competitions such as the Pascal, Cayley, and Fermat contests.

While Kells Academy adheres to Quebec Ministry of Education guidelines, it delivers programs with significantly greater flexibility, identifying individual student skill levels as the first step in the process. Classes with individualized programs help ensure that each student has the best opportunity for success.

English studies focus on the ability to read a variety of literature and respond with critical thought, sensitivity, and maturity. In analyzing a diversity of genres, students learn to creatively and effectively articulate their ideas and strengthen the clarity, strength, and accuracy of their own writing.

Fundamentals of grammar and vocabulary are reviewed regularly and are deemed an important part of the program at every level.

At Kells, emphasis is placed on reading fluency at all grade levels. Upon school entry, all students are given a full reading evaluation to determine skill level. Recommendations are made for students requiring extra support, which include:

  • In classroom online support, which enables students to work at their own pace to develop skills.
  • Use of assistive technology to access information, correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar
  • Additional group support, when requested, during FLEX time.
  • ESL (English Second Language) support.
  • After school homework program.
  • After school tutorials (extra cost).
  • Summer school (extra cost).

Guidance

Our guidance program ensures that students make informed choices about their future. Throughout high school, students are presented with a range of career choices with an emphasis on helping students maximize and understand their particular interests and aptitudes. Assistance with the paperwork for college applications is provided as well as letters of recommendation. To help students with personal concerns, the guidance counselor is available on a one-to-one basis.
