FLIPPING THE CLASSROOM

Kells Academy, for example, has allowed students to “flip the classroom” in that they can watch videos of their lectures from home ahead of class time and, therefore, class time can be used more effectively.

The students have a digital “check-in” program via their iPads where they check in to class, and the teacher can monitor everything that is on their screens (to avoid distractions).

“We’re creating a technological plan for the school where we are literally putting together a plan in the best interests of the students, both in learning the curriculum as well as applying technology in other parts of their life,” explained Lily Gulrajani, the school’s communications consultant.

Loyola High School is also using technology in a myriad of ways, both inside and outside the classroom. They implemented an iPad program in their school several years ago as well, and have found that it has been an extremely effective tool. “The idea behind it was a bit different,” said Paul Donovan, the school’s president. “The main reason we wanted to bring the iPads in is recognizing that, as technology becomes more pervasive, it’s our responsibility to look at that as a tool and ask how it can enhance (students’) lives in a positive way that contributes to society rather than something that dictates their life.”

Loyola also strives to keep its teachers up-to-date on technology, whether that’s in the form of training or seeking out advice from their own students, who are always discovering new apps, programs, and more.

“We’re having a ped day this year that is all on technology — it’s not forced on our teachers but we make things available for them to learn and improve their skills, if they wish,” Donovan said. “Even our students will bring new things and ideas to light.

“Technology makes the learning happen together, so that the teacher is walking with them while they’re learning. It’s more fitting with the way people naturally learn.”

Technology is making waves everywhere, especially in schools, and it’s completely revolutionizing the way in which students learn. There’s simply no limit to what teachers can present to their students, given that the entire world is right at their fingertips — and private schools are taking full advantage of this incredible learning curve.
